The Internal Rotating Inspection System (IRIS) is a non-destructive testing technique primarily used to inspect the internal surfaces of pipes, tubes, and other cylindrical structures for corrosion, erosion, and other defects. It operates by inserting a rotating ultrasonic transducer into the tube, which emits ultrasonic pulses perpendicular to the tube wall. As the transducer rotates, it scans the internal surface, and the reflected ultrasonic signals are analyzed to create a detailed cross-sectional image of the tube wall. This method provides precise measurements of wall thickness and defect characterization, making it invaluable in industries like petrochemical, power generation, and manufacturing where maintaining the integrity of tubing systems is critical.
