Positive Material Identification (PMI)

Positive Material Identification (PMI) is a non-destructive testing (NDT) method used to verify the composition of materials, particularly metals and alloys, to ensure they meet specific standards and specifications. PMI is critical in industries such as petrochemical, aerospace, and manufacturing, where material integrity is essential for safety and performance. By using techniques like X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and optical emission spectrometry (OES), PMI can quickly and accurately determine the elemental composition of materials. This process helps prevent the use of incorrect or substandard materials, reducing the risk of component failure, enhancing safety, and ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulations. PMI is often performed during material receipt, fabrication, installation, and maintenance to ensure the correct materials are used throughout the lifecycle of a project.
